Karen Knowles: Singer’s Surrey Hills ‘sophisticated treehouse’ - Gainesville Texas Realty Co.The secluded Surrey Hills treehouse home that has inspired singer-songwriter Karen Knowles for almost 30 years has hit the market.
Designed by late architect Bala Balendra influenced by the legendary Glenn Murcutt, who Balendra is believed to have worked with as well as Malaysian powerhouse Geoffrey Bawa, the four-bedroom house at 46 Boisdale Street was built around the surrounding nature. The stars aligned for Knowles, whose stardom was launched early on Young Talent Time and has included a stint with The Seekers alongside her solo career, to land the house in ‘93-’94. She was just about to sign off on another property close to the beach when an agent approached her with her dream home, based on a discussion they had had nine months prior. “I came and had a look at it and just fell in love with it,” Knowles said. The seller could see this and said “I only want to sell to her”. They remain friends today. |

Surrounded by trees and gardens full of surprises that continue to make her family smile, the dreamy pad brings the outdoors in and birdlife into constant conversation.
“I think nature itself is always a great inspiration, so to be in a comfortable environment where you are relating to nature outdoors is amazing,” Knowles said.
“Acoustically, the cathedral ceiling and the wood is just amazing to sing and play in as well, … it’s just got a really lovely resonance in that space.
“I think it’s just that softness that you have, especially in that top room, where you feel really held and supported, and its been a beautiful place to allow new music through, so I’ve just really enjoyed the space from that perspective: a really soft place to allow creativity through.”
Fletchers Canterbury director Tim Heavyside said the western cedar home, priced at $1.75m via expressions of interest private sale, was best described as “an elaborate sophisticated treehouse” and felt like you could be in Bali or Byron Bay rather than the ‘burbs.
“It’s got a special feel because you get views towards lush greenery from every window and aspect of the home, and that was part of the brief for the architect and the build,” he said.
It just felt like the right time to move on for Knowles, who still performs, teaches singing and has recently founded a wellness and support community under The House That Breathes.
